Elderly among flood victims saved by volunteers

SUBANG JAYA, Dec 25 — The Selangor National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) volunteers have saved an elderly who was hit by a roof due to a fallen tree in the flooding incident last Saturday night.

Its president Datuk Dr Gavin Voon said three volunteers from the non-governmental organisation had evacuated the woman in her 60s, who was trapped in her kitchen at Taman Sri Muda in Section 25, Shah Alam.

Voon said the woman, who lives alone, was cooking at the time and was slow to notice that water had surged in until it reached the waist level and was unable to escape.

“When our volunteers were conducting house-to-house inspection, they heard someone crying for help and decided to go in.

“They found the woman and noticed she had sustained an injury on her left leg and the volunteers immediately evacuated her and put her under the care of security forces,” he said when met at Kampung Bukit Lanchong community hall, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Worldwide Wellness Club president Gilbert Pang said the club had established a team consisting of 200 volunteers to help those who were affected by the floods.

He said the volunteers have been divided into a few groups to do disinfection works at the victims’ houses since last Sunday.

“We have also provided brooms, drinks and face masks to be distributed among the victims at their respective housing areas,” he said.

In a related development, the Shah Alam City Centre (MBSA) expected the process of cleaning up bulk waste in the flood-hit areas to be completed within two weeks.

Its mayor Datuk Zamani Ahmad Mansor said the cleanup process was being conducted in all areas in Shah Alam including in Taman Sri Muda, Section 25 and Padang Jawa in Section 16.

He said as of now a total of 824 tonnes of garbage have been collected around Shah Alam.

“We expect the number will be increased and MBSA had open a transit landfill in Section 21 following the flooding incident,” he said to the media.
