Operating hours of two landfills in Selangor extended for post-flood cleanup

SHAH ALAM, Dec 24 — The operating hours of two landfills located in Selangor is extended until 11 pm from yesterday to ease the cleaning process in disposing waste from the floods.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the extended hours apply to the landfill owned by Worldwide Holdings Berhad di Jeram and another at Berjaya Bukit Tagar in Hulu Selangor.

“Besides the landfill in Jeram owned by Worldwide Holdings, which is opened until 11pm from today (yesterday), I was informed that the Berjaya Bukit Tagar landfill will also be operating until 11pm from tomorrow (today).

“This is to facilitate the disposal of waste from the floods,” said Amirudin on Twitter yesterday.

Earlier, Amirudin and state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han had overseen the cleanup operations by KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) in Padang Jawa, here.

As of Wednesday night, a total of 2,064 metric tonnes of waste were collected by KDEBWM in the eight districts hit by the floods.

The waste disposal process involves 487 Roll On Roll Off (Roro) bins and 29 excavators with the manpower of 1,274 staff.

Meanwhile, Batu Tiga state assemblyman Rodziah Ismail had urged those affected to inform the local authorities of the post-flood domestic wastes at their homes.

She said this would ease and speed up the waste collection process.

The continuous downpour from December 17 to 19, which saw the highest rainfall ever recorded in Selangor, had caused extensive flooding throughout the state, resulting in thousands being displaced from homes.
