Selangor cancels New Year celebration to honour floods victims

By Alang Bendahara

SHAH ALAM, Dec 27 — The state-level 2022 New Year celebration has been cancelled and replaced with religious programmes, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the state will organise a tahlil ceremony, doa selamat and zikir munajat in memory and sympathy for the flood victims.

“The programmes will be run by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais). Surau, musolla are encouraged to participate in this activity and arrange it according to needs.

“Individuals, companies or any groups are advised to not organise any (New Year celebration) programmes,” Amirudin said during a press conference on the floods situation at the Selangor State Government Building here today.

Amirudin said last week’s floods affected over 40,000 individuals in Selangor.

The extraordinary rain from December 17 to 19 was double the previous highest rainfall average of 180mm, resulting in many places in Selangor becoming submerged in water.

All state government assets and Federal agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, the police, and the army, were mobilised to evacuate victims to safe locations, as well as disburse necessary goods.

So far the floods have claimed 25 lives, affected 40 thousand people, with 205 temporary relief centres opened in all eight districts in Selangor.
