SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued six continuous heavy rain warning on December 18 last year, which were ignored by some parties directly involved in disaster management.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the parties assumed that only states on the east coast of the peninsula will be affected by the floods brought by continuous heavy rains due to northeast monsoon runoff.

“Also preparations for the monsoon season are more focused on the east coast states and the unusual floods in Selangor that occurred is beyond the expectations of many parties.

“The flood in Selangor that started on December 18, 2021, occurred due to the unusual rainfall of 380 millimetres which equals to the average rainfall recorded in a month,” he said when tabling the papers on the flood disaster which occurred at the end of last year at the Special Meeting of Dewan Rakyat here today.

Ismail Sabri added that the high tide phenomenon that took place at the same time also made the floods worse.
