MSN ready to take on more challenges as it turns 51

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — The National Sports Council (MSN) which is celebrating its 51st anniversary yesterday, is prepared to continue taking on challenges to further the country’s sports excellence.

With four major multi-sport events this year, namely the Hanoi Sea Games in May, Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (July-August), Hangzhou Asian Games (September) and the Asian Para Games (October), MSN wants to drive the country’s sports to a higher level.

MSN director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said MSN would strive forward regardless of the challenges it is facing.

“This year is very tough as we are working within the constraints of Covid-19 pandemic but MSN is proud to shoulder its responsibilities for the nation’s sports achievement.

“MSN will continue to be resilient and committed to undertaking the roles entrusted to us,” he said in a video shared in conjunction with its anniversary celebration.

Commenting further, Ahmad Shapawi said in its 51 years of existence, MSN has been given various responsibilities starting with assisting the national sports associations to draft their training for the international meets.

“In fact, MSN itself had been given the task of steering the training programmes of national high-performance sports to take the country’s sports to a higher level,” he said

MSN was established under the National Sports Council of Malaysia Act 1971 and the National Sports Council Act (amendment 1979) launched by Second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein on February 21 1972.

In the past five decades, MSN has been the catalyst in sports development in advancing and scouting talents and preparing athletes for high-performance sports via programmes such as Jaya 88, Gemilang 2001, Road to Rio 2016, Kita Juara 2017 programme and Road to Tokyo 2020.
