Thunderstorms, heavy rain warning in Selangor, other states

SHAH ALAM, Feb 9 — The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in several states including Selangor until 8pm today.

The agency said on Twitter that the forecasted bad weather is expected to occur in most of the districts in Selangor.

Apart from Selangor, the warning is also issued to other states including Perlis, Penang, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.

Meanwhile in Kedah, similar weather is forecasted in several areas including Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu;  Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron) as well as Johor in Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Bahru.

The agency also forecasted thunderstorms and heavy showers in several areas in Sabah including Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Tambunan), Pantai Barat, Sandakan (Tongod, Telupid, Beluran) and Kudat (Kota Marudu).

MetMalaysia issues such warnings if signs are present indicating that thunderstorms with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, or are expected to occur over a one-hour duration.

The thunderstorm warnings are short-term, with each warning valid within a six-hour window after being issued.
