Early screening helps prevent cancer — Exco

SHAH ALAM, June 28 — Any individuals who are at risk of chronic diseases have been advised to undergo early screening tests, particularly those with a family history of cancer or are smokers.

State executive councillor for public health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud shared five facts on cancer to help more people become aware of its causes and the ways to prevent it.

She said cancer occurs due to abnormal cell growth and the condition can happen to anyone, regardless of age and sex.

“An individual has the risk of being diagnosed with colon cancer if they sleep less than six hours a day. However, 30 per cent to 50 per cent of the disease can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle.

“Apart from that, many advanced countries have succeeded in treating cancer patients using herbs,” she said in a Facebook post earlier today.

To this, Dr Siti Mariah encouraged the public to take part in the free health screening programme, organised by the state government, throughout Selangor.

Selangor Saring is targeting 500 to 1,000 participants in each state constituency, with those interested able to register via the SELangkah app.

With an allocation of RM3.4 million the programme is expected to benefit up to 39,000 individuals, especially those with a family history of ailments, obese individuals, or those leading unhealthy lifestyles.
