Continuous squalls in Klang Valley until tonight — MetMalaysia

SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — The inclement weather earlier predicted for Klang Valley continues, as the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasted heavy rains, strong winds and thunderstorms in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya until 9pm tonight.

In a statement issued at 6.20pm, it said other states and areas which will also experience bad weather include Kedah (Bandar Baharu), Penang (Barat Daya and Seberang Perai Selatan), Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim) and Kelantan (Kuala Krai and Gua Musang).

“Similarly Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera and Pekan), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Jempol), Johor (Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru), Sarawak: Samarahan (Simunjan), Sri Aman (Sri Aman), Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei) and Mukah (Tanjung Manis), and Sabah: Pedalaman (Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Ranau) and Sandakan (Telupid, Beluran and Sandakan) will also be affected,” said the agency.

MetMalaysia issues warnings whenever signs indicate a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm that is close to or is expected to occur for more than an hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release.

MetMalaysia said the bad weather will also result in strong winds at speeds of 50 kilometres (km) per hour and turbulent seas with waves reaching up to 3.5 metres that are dangerous to small boats.
