Maiden IIOA Conference in Malaysia to benefit sustainable economic development — Economist

LANGKAWI, Aug 30 — The 28th International Input-Output Association (IIOA) Conference greatly benefits the country in the development of a sustainable economy, said the Malaysian Input-Output Economics Association president, associate professor Mohd Yusof Saari.

The IIOA Conference runs from August 28-September 2, 2022, and is the first IIOA conference held in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Mohd Yusof said the conference will also give direction to the country to enact good policies by using new data compilation platforms, including new methods to collect data for research and statistics.

“Going forward, it will help the whole world to ensure that policies are formulated using the most up-to-date input-output table that reflects the situation and the economy in a particular place,” he told Bernama at the IIOA Conference here, which was officiated by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

Mohd Yusof said researchers and policymakers should utilise the input-output table which is an economic database to carry out impact analysis at a more detailed economic sector level.

“This provides a comprehensive analysis to ensure economic planning can be made more targeted and based on scientific evidence,” he said.

Among the topics highlighted are sustainable economics, global value chain analysis, disaster analysis, employment analysis, foreign labour needs and post-Covid-19 economic recovery.

The 28th IIOA Conference brought together 120 input-output technique practitioners, researchers and policymakers from 30 countries including seven entries from Malaysia.

Of the total participants, 58 per cent are from Asia, 30 per cent from Europe, 11 per cent from the Americas and the rest are from Africa.

The conference consists of a plenary session, a council meeting, an annual general assembly and a conference dinner.

It is jointly organised by the IIOA, the Malaysian Input-Output Economics Association and the Future Labour Market Research Centre (EU-ERA).
