State govt monitoring water levels in rivers, agencies put on high alert — MB

SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 — The Selangor government is closely monitoring the latest situation on water levels in several main rivers in the state following non-stop rain in the Klang Valley since noon today.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said all relevant agencies have been put on high alert.

“I have received reports of flash floods in several areas in Taman Sri Muda in Section 25, Shah Alam.

“The flood gates have been opened as an effort to speed up the receding water,” he said on Twitter today.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the floodwater in Taman Sri Muda has receded following immediate actions taken by state authorities.

“This incident occurred as a result of the high water level in Sungai Rasau, as well as the situation of stagnant water which delayed the flow of water out to Sungai Rasau.

“Therefore I have instructed the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department to activate the pumping station and open the floodgates. Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God) the floodwaters have receded,” he said on Twitter today.

Izham said he will continue to monitor the flash floods situation in Taman Sri Muda and other areas in the state.

“I advise the residents to remain cautious and report immediately if there are any untoward incidents,” he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) started issuing heavy rains, strong winds and thunderstorms alerts for the Klang Valley at 12.25pm noon today.

The alert for the whole of Klang Valley is still active with the latest statement issued at 6.20pm forecasting the bad weather to last until 9pm tonight.
