High tide phenomenon: Klang district bunds, sluice gates in good condition

By Zareef Muzammil

KLANG, Sept 13 — The bunds and sluice gates throughout the Klang district are in good condition following regular maintenance works carried out by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID).

However, Klang district officer Shahman Jalaludin hopes no problem arises when the district is hit by heavy rain, especially during the northwest monsoon phenomenon from the middle of this month until December.

“So far the sluice gates are in good condition as the relevant authority (DID) has taken early steps by repairing any damages. We hope it will work when needed.

“The same authority has also fixed as well as raised the damaged and leaking bunds,” he said during a press conference after inspecting the bunds in Pengkalan Tok Muda, Kapar, here yesterday.

He also informed that no bunds were broken in his district following the high tide phenomenon early yesterday morning, which saw the sea level rising to 5.46 metres (m).

“This means that our bunds can withstand water levels of up to 5.5m. If there are small damages, then that is normal,” he said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) predicted that Selangor will face a shift from a southwest monsoon to the northeast monsoon that will result in a rainfall rate of between 100 and 400 millimetres (mm) from the middle of this month until December.

During the same period, the high tide phenomenon is also expected to occur in coastal areas along Port Klang with the highest sea level expected to reach 5.5 metres.

The situation may result in seawater overflowing into the residential areas in addition to the risk of flooding if there is heavy rain.
