Selangor dams capacity at over 90 pct, able to meet demand

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Sept 26 — All dams in Selangor are at a good level with over 90 per cent capacity as of September 21, said state executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian.

He said with that capacity, the state is able to supply water for at least three months and to a maximum of six months if there is no rain, thus making it sufficient to meet the people’s needs.

He said research has also shown that the supply from the state’s water sources is sufficient to accommodate domestic and industrial use until 2065.

“Based on the same research, a development of the supply system, which involved a high cost was done in an effort to increase the amount of supply from water sources.

“This includes the development of water supply in Sungai Rasau and the implementation of the Hybrid Off River Augmentation System (HORAS) 3000,” he said in his speech during the World River Day 2022 celebration organised by the Friends of Rivers Malaysia (FoRM) at Taman Awam Pengkalan Batu in Klang.

Meanwhile, Hee said the quality issues of the state’s main water sources are often affected by pollution incidents done by irresponsible parties.

“This resulted in the water treatment plant (WTP) being forced to stop its operation, causing unscheduled water supply disruption to the consumers,” he said.
