Public can reach government agencies via social media, official channels during crises — MB

SHAH ALAM, Oct 12 — Selangor state agencies have already implemented and adopted social media as official communication channels for citizens to contact them, in the event of a a state-wide or national crisis, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shahri.

He said the times have changed and the authorities must adapt accordingly as they move towards the future.

“Thus, social media is a good tool and medium for government agencies as official channels to connect with citizens, providing assistance when necessary. We encourage citizens to contact any government agencies through various social media apps when in need.

“But please bear with us in responding because the rate of messages coming in can be overwhelming. However, rest assured, we are always looking, checking, and responding to the accounts,” Amirudin said.

He was speaking during an interview broadcasted on Bernama Radio earlier today.

When asked about Selangor’s flood preparations, the Menteri Besar said although the government is well-prepared this year to handle any impending disasters, he also advises the public to be self-prepared as well.

“Make sure to prepare a flood preparation kit at home where all your essential items can be easily and safely taken with you, should a disaster strike.

“Only take out small and easy-to-carry items, and listen to the officers’ instructions so no one gets hurt,” he said.

Amirudin added that monitoring flood patterns is not a straightforward job as past data may not be the same as the current situations, something that was witnessed last year.

The heavy floods that affected many areas in the state at the end of last year resulted in over 50,000 victims displaced from their homes, the biggest disaster to occur in Selangor since 1971.

Up to March this year, more than 132,000 people were affected by the floods with the state government contributing a total of RM132 million to help those affected.
