Malaysia Cup: KL City suffer setback while Selangor carves comfortable lead

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC’s Malaysia Cup defence suffered a setback when they lost 0-1 to Terengganu FC (TFC) at home in their first quarter-final leg yesterday.

The home team managed to threaten in the early minutes of the match with a good attempt by team captain Paulo Josue in the third minute but ended up conceding a goal when the Turtles’ import striker Kpah Sherman took advantage of a chaotic situation in front of KL City’s goal in the 14th minute to slot in the solitary goal of the match.

Sherman’s attempts at a second goal in the 30th minute were saved by KL City’s goalkeeper Kevin Ray, while Josue’s header hit the goalpost five minutes before halftime.

TFC were down to 10 men after goalkeeper Mohd Suhaimi Husin fouled Colombian striker, Romel Morales, outside the penalty box, and received his marching orders in the 62nd minute. KL City FC, however, was unable to capitalise on the advantage and the match ended with their 0-1 loss.

Meanwhile, 33-time champions Selangor FC put on a good performance by downing Negeri Sembilan FC 2-0 at Petaling Jaya City Stadium in Kelana Jaya.

The hosts dominated the first half but failed to convert that into goals, even though they tried repeatedly. They managed to score in the 56th minute through a penalty when defender Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar was brought down by Herold Mark Goulon two minutes earlier.

Substitute Aliff Haiqal Lokman Hakim Lau then managed to add to the score when he tucked in the second goal in injury time.

Selangor’s win put them in a comfortable position as they head to Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi for the second leg against Negeri Sembilan, while TFC await KL City’s visit, both matches scheduled for November 12.
