Para Sukma: Selangor contingent surpasses target with 78 medals

SHAH ALAM, Nov 9 — Selangor’s athlete performance during the 2022 Malaysian Para Games (Para Sukma) should be commended following their achievement in bringing home 78 medals, surpassing the target of 76 medals.

Selangor won 28 golds, 26 silvers and 24 bronzes.

Contingent head Azura Sarbin said the achievement was more meaningful as it had placed the state in the fourth place in the overall ranking of the competition, which concluded on November 6.

“Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), out of the 10 events we competed in, we only failed to bring home medals from three events, namely badminton, chess and archery.

“The proudest feat was when our swimming team won 26 medals, 14 of which were gold medals. Originally, we had targeted to win nine gold medals, but this year we outscored Sabah,” she told Selangorkini.

She also went on to explain various difficulties and challenges they had faced throughout the games, including several athletes having to withdraw themselves to focus on their families and careers.

Azura, who is also the Selangor State Youth and Sports Department director, said thorough planning will be carried out after the event to ensure the excellent record could be continued in the next edition.

She said the department would discuss with the state government to decide the suitable incentives to give the athletes.

Sabah was crowned the champion of Para Sukma 2022 after collecting 54 gold medals, surpassing Sarawak (50 golds) and Johor (38 golds).
