KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — The volume index of wholesale and retail trade registered a growth of 25.9 per cent to 144.5 points in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022 compared with the same quarter in the previous year, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
In a statement, the department said the positive growth was recorded in all sub-sectors, namely motor vehicles (142.4 per cent), retail trade (29.6 per cent), and wholesale trade (7.1 per cent).
“On a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) comparison, the volume index also increased 1.6 per cent in Q3 2022.
“For seasonally adjusted volume index, the wholesale and retail trade decreased 2.1 per cent as against the second quarter of 2022,” it said.
Meanwhile, for performance across sub-sectors, the volume index of wholesale trade growth of 7.1 per cent in Q3 2022 was attributed to wholesale of household goods with 24.3 per cent, followed by wholesale on a fee or contract basis of 15.4 per cent.
For quarterly comparison, the volume index of wholesale trade went up 0.5 per cent.
The positive growth of 29.6 per cent in retail trade was contributed by retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores (51.7 per cent), retail sale of other goods in specialised stores (43.6 per cent), and retail sale of non-specialised stores (32.3 per cent).
For q-o-q comparison, the volume index of this sub-sector posted an increment of 2.9 per cent.
The increase of 142.4 per cent year-on-year in the volume index of motor vehicles was supported by sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories which grew 212.9 per cent and 166.2 per cent, respectively.
The performance of this sub-sector increased 0.9 per cent as against the previous quarter.
Separately, DOSM said Malaysia’s sales value of wholesale and retail trade hit RM134.0 billion in September 2022, up 23.9 per cent year-on-year.
“The increase was attributed to the retail trade sub-sector which rose RM13.3 billion or 30.0 per cent to record RM57.7 billion.
“Wholesale trade expanded 13.3 per cent or RM7.1 billion to RM60.0 billion while motor vehicles surged 51.0 per cent or RM5.5 billion to RM16.3 billion,” it said.
For a month-on-month comparison, sales value increased 0.3 per cent, contributed by the motor vehicles sub-sector which rose 1.2 per cent.
For the performance across sub-sectors, the retail trade sub-sector growth of 30.0 per cent in September 2022 was supported by retail sales in non-specialised stores which grew 31.9 per cent or RM5.2 billion to RM21.3 billion.
Likewise, other groups in this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales in specialised stores (43.4 per cent), retail sales of automotive fuel (44.4 per cent), and retail sales of household goods (23.1 per cent).
The 13.3 per cent growth in the wholesale trade sub-sector in September 2022 was lifted by other specialised wholesale which rose 13.9 per cent or RM2.8 billion to RM23.2 billion.
This was followed by wholesale of household goods, wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals, and wholesale of machinery, equipment and supplies with 21.9 per cent, 16.0 per cent, and 11.1 per cent, respectively.
The increase of 51.0 per cent in the motor vehicles sub-sector was mainly attributed to sales of motor vehicles which grew 40.2 per cent.
Other groups that contributed to this growth were sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories (65.8 per cent), maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (80.2 per cent), and sales, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (53.3 per cent).
In terms of volume index, the wholesale and retail trade registered a year-on-year growth of 18.4 per cent, contributed by motor vehicles and retail trade which increased 43.9 per cent and 27.1 per cent, respectively.
Similarly, the wholesale trade also recorded a positive growth of 3.5 per cent. The seasonally adjusted volume index declined 2.0 per cent month-on-month.
