PETALING JAYA, Jan 8 — Over RM2 million has been allocated to low-income families in conjunction with this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the assistance through the Jom Shopping programme provides shopping vouchers to each recipient amounting to RM200.

“The distribution has been made with each state assembly receiving between 300 and 400 vouchers. This is an annual event to help those in need.

“Previously, during a major festival, the state government would allocate RM2 to RM3 million to be distributed. In a year, more than RM9 million has been given out,” he said when met at the Darul Ehsan Book Initiative Bookstore launch ceremony, here yesterday.

The 2023 Selangor Budget has allocated RM16.48 million for the provision of Jom Shopping vouchers in conjunction with three major festivals, namely Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali, which will benefit 82,400 recipients to ease their burden.

The voucher’s value was also increased from RM100 to RM200 following the economic slowdown and the needs of the people.
