Gombak fire: Man recalls final meeting with grandchildren

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 — A birthday do with his grandchildren last week will forever remain in Lokman Marni’s memory after the two siblings perished in a fire at a terrace house in Kampung Simpang Tiga, Gombak, early this morning.

Lokman, 57, said Nur Syaza Alfisya Muhammad Faizan, 10, and her brother, Muhammad Al Qayyum, 7, attended his birthday party in Sabak Bernam on December 26.

“That was the last time I met them. Everything seemed normal back then and there was nothing odd about their behaviour,” he told reporters at the scene.

Elaborating, Lokman said he rushed to the location after being informed about the incident at 4am by his 28-year-old daughter, only to find her in a weak condition outside the house.

“My daughter is heavily pregnant with her third child and could not enter the house because her leg was injured after stepping on glass. She was taken to the Selayang Hospital for treatment,” he said.

Lokman further said that his daughter and her husband, 30, went out for a meal at 3am and left the two siblings at home.

Nur Syaza Alfisya and Muhammad Al Qayyum’s charred remains were found in a room and they were believed to have been trapped inside the house during the incident.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis said the department received a distress call at 3.54am, and 22 firefighters from the Selayang and Rawang fire and rescue stations, as well as the Gombak Volunteer Fire Squad, were rushed to the scene.

The house was 70 per cent destroyed in the incident and the victims’ bodies were sent to the Selayang Hospital for post-mortem.
