Net selling by foreign investors continues for fifth consecutive week

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — Foreign investors continued to dispose of Malaysian equities last week to the tune of RM512.3 million — marking the fifth consecutive week of their net selling and bringing their year-to-date net selling to RM119.9 million, said MIDF Research.

In its Fund Flow Report for the shortened trading week ending February 10, 2023, the research house said the largest net selling on the local bourse occurred on Tuesday at RM220.57 million and the lowest net selling was on Thursday at RM40.84 million.

Bursa Malaysia and its subsidiaries were closed on Monday (February 6)for the Thaipusam replacement holiday.

MIDF Research said the only sectors which recorded net inflows by foreign investors last week were the energy sector at RM26.4 million and the property sector at RM3.9 million.

On the contrary, the construction, technology and financial services sectors recorded the highest net outflows for the week at RM724.6 million, RM115.9 million and RM111.2 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, local institutions continued to pick up Malaysian equities with a net buy of RM121.0 million last week.

“This marked their fifth consecutive week of net buying. Local institutions net bought every day with the largest net buying on Tuesday at RM85.80 million, followed by Friday (RM34.63 million) and Thursday (RM25.74 million).

“Year-to-date, local institutions have net bought RM937.0 million,” it said.

Local retailers also returned as net buyers for the second consecutive week, with the largest net buying on Tuesday at RM134.78 million, followed by Wednesday and Friday at RM57.15 million and RM56.76 million, respectively, while the lowest net buying came in at RM15.09 million on Thursday.

It also noted that in terms of participation, the average daily trading volume (ADTV) had decreased across the board (local retailers -24.9 per cent; local institutions -22.5 per cent; foreign investors -22.3 per cent).
