Bukit Melawati rep proposes setting up of gender equality committee in state assembly

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, March 16 — Bukit Melawati state assemblyman Juwairiya Zulkifli proposes the establishment of a Special Selection Committee for Human Rights and Gender Equality in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

She said it was in line with the establishment of a special selection committee on gender fundamental rights that currently exists in the Parliament.

“This issue of gender equality is not only a women’s issue but it is to raise social justice for women and related issues considering that women are part of almost 50 per cent of the population in Selangor.

“Therefore, it is appropriate for a committee to be established to help look at existing policies and laws as well as programmes to ensure that all the needs and rights of women are raised, preserved and defended under the administration of the Selangor government,” she said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Meanwhile, Juwairiya said she was also interested in the state government’s programme in empowering women to become leaders such as the Selangor Women’s Conference and the Selangor Women’s Academy.

“However, my question is whether the state government plans to continue these programmes and how these programmes can help towards achieving 30 per cent involvement of women as decision makers at all levels,” she said.
