Sarawak to set up financial institution to help SMEs

SIBU, April 25 — A financial institution will be set up in Sarawak to help small- and medium-sized entrepreneurs venture into new economic activities, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

He said the details of the proposed institution would be announced in two months’ time.

“This institution will provide facilities for loans and funds according to economic principles for them to participate in economic projects we are developing,” Abang Johari said.

The key now is to equip entrepreneurs with at least basic economic knowledge to enable them to move forward.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house of state Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Annuar Rapaee here today.

Abang Johari said infrastructure facilities being actively developed under Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) were expected to be fully completed in 2025.

These infrastructure facilities will help to boost new economic development which emphasises environmental sustainability, including carbon storage, to turn Sarawak into a high-income state by 2030.

He said Sarawak was emphasising education and training for the people so that they could venture into new economic activities.

“This is why we give out special bursaries (under Sarawak Foundation) for the Bumiputera community to further their education to the tertiary level,” Abang Johari said.

Meanwhile, Annuar said Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) would be using a new formula to increase its student enrolment.

Dr Annuar, who is also UTS’ board of directors chairman, had submitted a proposal to Abang Johari on conducting quality foundation studies at the university to enable its students to further their studies at other universities locally and abroad.
