KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has announced that the new year school session will once again start in January beginning from 2026.

She said this is part of the government’s efforts to bring the national education system back to normal following the unprecedented disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Nibong Tebal MP also said that the Education Ministry (MOE) had taken steps to readjust the academic school calendar for the 2024/2025 session by bringing it forward to February 2025.

“As a result of these changes, the school session for the 2023/2024 academic calendar will continue starting from March 2023.

“MOE will assess the needs and suitability of preparing the academic calendar for subsequent years to ensure optimal implementation of teaching and learning, especially the required 32 to 36 weeks of learning needed to complete the entire school curriculum in a year.

“Therefore, I am pleased to inform the Dewan Rakyat that MOE has initiated efforts to have the school academic calendar for the 2024/2025 session to begin in February 2025.

“Subsequently, in 2026, we plan for the school term to start in January,” she said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat earlier today.

Fadhlina was responding to a question from Sri Gading MP Aminolhuda Hassan on the measures taken by the ministry to ensure the academic calendar for schools to begin in January again.

She said that the changes would also take into account other factors, including ensuring that it does not interfere with public examination schedules such as Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM).

“The ministry has also aligned the schedule of public examinations with the changes in the academic school calendar,” she said.
