Half mln for welfare of former athletes as gesture of thanks — MB

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

SHAH ALAM, June 5 — The state government has allocated RM500,000 to assist underprivileged former Selangor athletes, via the Ceria Atlet Selangor programme.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the funds are part of the efforts to alleviate their burdens as they have brought honour to and served the nation well, and as a gesture of appreciation for their services after retirement.

“State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman has been fairly active in identifying and taking care of the athletes’ welfare. Over the years, Selangor has also allocated assistance to support former athletes.”

“We identify the athletes in need who are from Selangor and have represented the country, determining if they face health or economic problems. Thus we not only look out for them in the prime of their lives but also in their later years,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking during a press conference presenting the Selangor Sports Awards 2021 – 2022, at Dewan Jubli Perak Abdul Aziz yesterday.

The Menteri Besar also urged all quarters to work together in developing sports in Selangor and to produce high-achieving athletes.

“The three components of family, coaches, and state sports associations play a crucial role in developing sports.

“I believe that via the associations’ programmes and policies, with the cooperation of parents and coaches, we will be able to produce more outstanding athletes,” he said.
