SHAH ALAM, June 27 — Selangor has assumed the top spot for domestic travel and was the most visited state in 2022, recording more than 22 million tourists.

Tourism Selangor in a statement today said domestic tourism in the state has recorded a consistent achievement in the travel industry, with 38.9 per cent of domestic tourism spending being contributed by shopping activities in Selangor.

“Tourism is one of the largest industries in Malaysia, contributing RM 197.9 billion to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021.

“With Selangor taking the lead since the pandemic, the state managed to increase domestic tourists by 33.4 per cent in 2022.

“This has put Selangor above a few other states recorded, leaving Kuala Lumpur with 16.9 million visitors, Sarawak with 15.5 million, Perak with 14.6 million and Pahang with 13.2 million,” the statement read.

The state agency said that Selangor offers a wide variety of activities, including gastronomy, cyclotourism, agro-tourism, and eco-tourism.

“As the state’s official tourism promotion agency, Tourism Selangor has driven the state’s tourism sector with a well-rounded execution through its domestic tourism promotional campaign, ‘Nak Bercuti? Pusing Selangor Dulu!’,” it said, adding that the campaign includes partnerships with industry players such as hotel operators, tourism agencies, airlines, educational institutions and retail industries.

Tourism Selangor added the state will remain consistent in attracting tourists and has recorded an increase of 15.3 per cent in tourist arrival for the first quarter of 2023.

It said Selangor is aiming for an increase of 5.04 million domestic and international tourists by the end of 2023.
