SHAH ALAM, June 30 — Over 60 million passengers have used the Smart Selangor Bus service since the state administration introduced the free service in 2015, according to recent data released by the state administration.

In a Facebook post yesterday, state executive councillor for public transportation Ng Sze Han said a total of 166 buses have been deployed on 50 routes, with an annual allocation of RM45 million.

He mentioned that the highest ridership was recorded in 2019, with 15.6 million passengers travelling to government institutions, schools, government healthcare centres, and commercial centres.

“An efficient transportation system can contribute to environmental sustainability and make our cities more liveable. Since taking the responsibility of leading the public transportation portfolio in 2018, efforts to promote the use of Bas Smart Selangor have been successful until the Covid-19 pandemic struck,” he said.

Furthermore, Ng stated that Selangor Mobility, which focuses on a more comprehensive transportation mode, was introduced because of the low utilisation rate of public transportation.

Ng also shared that the integrated public transport network in the state combines Smart Selangor Bus services with micro-mobility vehicles, e-scooters, bicycles, pedestrian routes and on-demand transit vans.

The system aims to address the first-mile and last-mile connectivity issues, with the goal of increasing the public transportation mode share from 20 to 40 per cent by 2025.
