State-operated affordable mini markets soon?

By Shamz Johan

AMPANG JAYA, June 28 — If all goes to plan, the people of Selangor can soon purchase essential goods at affordable prices from state-run mini markets.

Executive councillor for entrepreneur development Rodziah Ismail said the Selangor government is currently considering a proposal to set up such stores in all state constituencies.

She added that if the plan is implemented, the public can expect to purchase items such as chicken, beef, eggs and other dry goods at below market price.

“I have been informed that we might establish mini markets in all state constituencies soon. I have also requested one for Ampang,” she said in reference to her parliamentary constituency.

She said this after visiting the Jualan Ehsan Rahmah (JER) programme at the Ukay Perdana night market site yesterday.

Commenting on the JER initiative by the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS), Rodziah said it will carry on as usual despite the dissolution of the state assembly last Friday.

“We still have a caretaker government, and there is still a balance of RM12 million in funding that has been approved for the programme. So, there’s no problem for us to continue with it.”

JER, which was initially known as the Jelajah Ehsan Rakyat, will continue to be conducted until the end of the year, with the cooperation of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had said that the initiative is set to offer RM18 million in savings to the public through state government subsidy, and that the programme is expected to record RM37 million in total sales.

AMong Among other things, JER offers whole chicken at RM10, frozen solid meat (RM10 per pack), Grade B eggs (RM10 per carton), puffer fish (RM6 per pack), 5kg cooking oil (RM25) and 5kg rice (RM10).

In conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha period, PKPS had announced that the JER initiative will take a five-day break and will resume as usual on July 3.
