It’s not over, Selangor Sultan says over Sanusi’s insult

SHAH ALAM, July 17 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj considers the issue surrounding Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s recent insult against him as being far from over.

This came after the ruler held separate audiences with state police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan and Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Ahmad Yunus Hairi earlier today to discuss the matter.

“These separate meetings discussed the statement made by Sanusi in one of his recent speeches in Selangor, which was deemed to have insulted the Selangor royal institution,” the Selangor Royal Office said in a statement today.

“His Royal Highness has decreed that this matter is still unresolved,’’ it added.

Sanusi was accused of mocking Selangor’s royal institution during a political ceramah in Selayang on July 11 after he questioned the appointment of Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari as the state menteri besar.

The PAS leader claimed that this is unlike the Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, who would not have picked someone as incapable as Amirudin to lead the state.

A video recording of the ceramah quoted Sanusi as saying: “The Sultan of Kedah is great, not just an ordinary Sultan but a remarkable Sultan. Look at the menteri besar (referring to himself). A great Sultan like that would not choose a lousy menteri besar like Amirudin.”

Amirudin was appointed Selangor menteri besar on June 19, 2018 following a royal assent from Sultan Sharafuddin.

Sanusi’s remarks have since garnered widespread condemnation from various quarters, with several parties, including members of the Selangor Council of the Royal Court, having lodged police reports over the matter.

On Saturday, Sanusi, who is also Perikatan Nasional’s election director, posted on Facebook expressing his ‘sincerest apologies’ and sought the forgiveness of the Selangor Sultan.

Meanwhile, Sultan of Selangor’s private secretary Dato’ Mohamad Munir Bani, in a statement today, said Sultan Sharafuddin expressed his appreciation to members of the Selangor Royal Council for lodging the police report on July 14 regarding the issue.

“His Royal Highness is also very pleased with the support shown by the members of the Selangor Royal Council and all related parties,” he said.
