Minister to lead Malaysian delegation to 56th AMM in Indonesia on Tuesday

JAKARTA, July 10 — Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 56th Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings, from Tuesday to Friday (July 11 to July 14), in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to Asean Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo said Zambry will also participate in the Post-Ministerial Conferences (PMC), with each of the 11 Asean dialogue partner countries.

The Asean dialogue partners involved include the United States, Australia, China, India, Japan, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the United Kingdom.

Other programmes include the 24th Asean Plus Three Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (APT FMM); the 13th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting; the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission Meeting; the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), and the 30th Asean Regional Forum (ARF).

The matters to be discussed include the progress of Asean community development, priorities and key outcomes of Asean under the Asean Chairmanship by Indonesia, implementation of cooperation under the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) policy, and regional and international issues of common interest.

“They will also discuss preparations for the 43rd Asean Summit and Related Meetings scheduled to be held in September 2023 in Indonesia,” she said during today’s media briefing.

According to Nur Izzah, the 56th AMM is a good platform for Malaysia to share and exchange views with Asean member countries on issues of common interest, including efforts towards economic recovery, global supply chains, food security, climate change, and energy transition.

Malaysia’s participation reflects the country’s commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region, particularly when the region faces uncertainties in terms of security and socio-economic aspects.

“At the end of this Meeting, the Asean Foreign Ministers are expected to reaffirm several documents, including the Joint Statement of the 56th AMM, which will detail the discussions’ outcomes and strategic decisions made during these meetings,” she said.

As the coordinating country for Asean-Canada dialogue relations for the period 2021-2024, Malaysia and Canada will co-chair the PMC+1 Meeting on Thursday (July 13).

Zambry is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several counterparts from the attending countries at the 56th AMM, to strengthen bilateral relations and foster shared understanding among world leaders on regional and global issues of common interest.

He will also have meetings with Malaysian nationals serving at the Asean Secretariat and related organisations.
