SELAYANG, July 11 — Over 1,500 families from B40 income households in the Rawang state constituency have benefitted from a food bank programme organised by its incumbent assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat since last October.
The initiative was meant to alleviate the burden of the underprivileged group amid the high cost of living.
Among the essential items included in the food basket include rice, vermicelli, flour, cooking oil and sugar donated by the Rawang state assembly service centre and several private companies.
“We distribute these food baskets to qualified families, based on information gathered from village heads, residents’ associations and non-governmental organisations.
“Besides that, we also frequent the ground to identify any families that may require help, to ensure no one is left out,” he said when visiting a Jualan Ehsan Rahmah programme in Taman Pelangi, here, yesterday.
The Rawang food bank programme was introduced in October last year as an initiative to collect dry food items before distributing them to the less privileged families.
According to Chua, his office also provides assistance to low-income residents who suffer from major illnesses, by applying for the Bantuan Sihat Selangor (BSS) scheme.
“To date, more than 100 Rawang citizens have applied for the scheme, with the majority of their applications having been approved,” he said.
BSS is a state government initiative meant to provide free treatments for dialysis, eye cataract and minor operations, among others.
