Its chairman Tan Sri Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said nomination day for candidates in the 15th state assembly elections for Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu is July 29, while early voting is on August 8.

Abdul Ghani told a press conference today 9,773,571 million voters are eligible to cast their ballot in the upcoming state polls. The figure is inclusive of 9.67 million regular voters and the others include soldiers and their spouses (49,660 people), police personnel and their spouses (47,728), and absentee voters overseas (1,727).

A total of 661,905 voters are aged between 18 and 20, while 28,991 people are aged 90 and above.

“The campaign period has been fixed for 14 days, beginning from after the announcement of the candidates  on July 29, until 11.58 pm on August 11, 2023,” he said.

Abdul Ghani said the commission has estimated the upcoming state polls to cost RM420 million.

He also said a total of 153,760 officers will be appointed to handle the election process, where a total of 173 nomination centres and 186 official vote-tallying centres will be opened.

Voters in the six states will cast their votes at 3,450 voting centres, involving a total of 17,425 polling streams, adding that the polling centres would include 26 with 377 channels for early voters. The EC will station 245 election officers for the election process and they would be aided by 740 assistant managers.

From July 17, voters can check the information on the polling centres and stations, as well as their serial numbers via https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my or contact the EC Hotline at 03-8892 7018/ 7218/ 7124 or through the MySPR Semak application.

The state elections were called after the state legislative assemblies of the six states were recently dissolved.

Kelantan was the first state among the six to dissolve its state assembly on June 22, followed by Selangor on June 23, Penang, Kedah, and Terengganu (June 28), and Negeri Sembilan (July 1).

This is the first time several state polls are to be held concurrently outside of the general election.

Previously, the 15th general election was held on November 19 of last year.
