State polls: EC to hold special meeting on Wednesday

By Selangor Journal Team

SHAH ALAM, July 3 — The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on Wednesday (July 5) to discuss and determine the important dates for the state elections to be held in six states.

This follows the announcement of the recent dissolution of the Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu state assemblies.

Its secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said in a statement today the special meeting will be chaired by commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh.

“A press conference will be held immediately after the meeting,” the statement read.

On June 22, Kelantan was the first state under Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) to have dissolved its state assembly, six days before its term expired on June 28.

This was followed by Selangor on June 23, two days before the end of its five-year term on June 25, Kedah, Penang and Terengganu on June 28, and Negeri Sembilan on July 1.

The other remaining states held their state elections concurrently with the 15th general elections (GE15) on November 19 of last year or earlier.

Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan are presently governed by Pakatan Harapan (Harapan), while the state governments of Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu are administered by the Perikatan Nasional component party, PAS.
