IPOH, Aug 14 — Fresh diploma and degree holders need to be lifelong learners and adapt to developments in industry, said Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Razak Jaafar.
He said they need to make a commitment to be lifelong learners by reading books, attending seminars and participating in courses related to the latest developments in their respective fields.
He noted that a deep understanding on this would strengthen the professional reputation of Higher Education Institution graduates by finding opportunities for learning and intellectual growth.
“Don’t be afraid to look for new opportunities to expand your experience and knowledge. If there is an opportunity to participate in interesting projects, work abroad or study at a leading institution, take the opportunity with open arms.
“A strong professional network can provide opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and important information thus opening up wider career opportunities,” he said at the Politeknik Ungku Omar 51st convocation ceremony here today.
Also present at the event were Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges Department director-general Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail and Politeknik Ungku Omar director Dr Shamsuri Abdullah.
A total of 2,062 graduates will receive their respective diplomas and bachelor’s degrees during the five-day convocation.
Meanwhile, Abdul Razak said the Higher Education Ministry recognises the importance of practical experience and field work in equipping graduates with practical skills and relevant industry knowledge.
“Therefore, the implementation of quality, relevant, specific and meaningful practical programmes in industry is the main focus in addition to strengthening collaboration among higher education institutions.”
Ha added that, the Higher Education Ministry encourages collaborations among onstitutions of higher learning to share resources, expertise, and experience in improving the quality of higher education.
Abdul Razak said the collaboration could involve student exchanges, joint research and sharing of programmes and courses.
“the Ministry also provides skills enhancement courses for graduates and professional workers to hone practical and technical skills relevant to the job market.”
