Selangor declares tomorrow a public holiday after state polls victory

By Diana Abd Wahab

SHAH ALAM, Aug 13 — The state government has declared tomorrow a public holiday after the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (Harapan-BN) pact retained the state with a simple majority.

Selangor Secretary Dato’ Haris Kasim said the holiday is in conjunction with yesterday’s state election.

“I am pleased to say the Selangor government has agreed to declare Monday, August 14, which is 27 Muharram 1445H, a statewide public holiday for the 15th Selangor Election,” he said in a statement today.

On Friday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced August 14 will be declared a public holiday if the unity coalition retained Selangor.

The Election Commission last night announced the unity bloc won 34 out of 56 state seats, which allows it to form the government with a simple majority.

In a presser last night, Amirudin said the bloc would have claimed a two-thirds’ majority if it won four more seats it narrowly missed.

In his campaign, the MB was confident of a two-thirds’ majority of 38 seats, but Harapan-BN lost each of the four seats by fewer than 500 votes.

The seats are Taman Medan (lost by 30 votes), Gombak Setia (58 votes), Sungai Kandis (167) and Dengkil (407).
