Selangor doing well as nearly 70 pct approve of state govt — Study

SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 — The electorate’s approval of the Selangor state government stands at a respectable 67 per cent, according to a new study by independent polling and research body Merdeka Centre.

Its findings were based on surveys carried out in various stages from July 3 until today among 6,179 respondents, comprising a representative sample of Malaysian voters aged 18 and above voting in the six states.

In Selangor, 68 per cent of Malay voters feel the state is heading in the right direction, while for the Chinese and Indian communities, it is 82 per cent and 77 per cent, respectively.

In terms of the state government’s performance, 67 per cent of Malay voters report they are satisfied, while 87 per cent of Chinese voters and 75 per cent of of Indian voters likewise report the same.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s leadership remains strong, as Merdeka Centre indicated that 63 per cent of Malay voters, 73 per cent of Chinese voters, and 62 per cent of Indian voters are satisfied with his performance.

For Selangor’s residents, inflation and living costs remain a priority, with 52.2 per cent of all respondents citing it as a point of concern, followed by economic growth at 5.9 per cent.

Overall, most voters across the board report moderate levels of satisfaction. 49 per cent of Negeri Sembilan’s voters are satisfied with its perceived direction, while in Penang it is 56 per cent, in Kedah it is 67 per cent, in Kelantan it is 47 per cent, and in Terengganu it is 68 per cent.

For state government performance, it is 61 per cent for Negeri Sembilan, 58 per cent for Penang, 73 per cent for Kedah, 51 per cent for Kelantan, and 71 per cent for Terengganu.

As for the Menteri Besar of Chief Minister’s performance, it is 59 per cent for Negeri Sembilan, 55 per cent for Penang, 77 per cent for Kedah, 58 per cent for Kelantan, and 67 per cent for Terengganu.
