Vietnam, Singapore eye comprehensive strategic partnership

HANOI, Aug 28 (Bernama-VNA) — Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his visiting Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong agreed to consider upgrading the relationship between both countries to a comprehensive strategic partnership during their talks in Hanoi on Monday.

Chinh stressed the importance of Lee’s visit, considering that the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership, saying it is expected to contribute to strengthening the relationship.

The trip also signifies the shared determination of both countries to elevate the relationship to a new level, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) quoted Chinh as saying.

Congratulating Singapore on its economic recovery and development, the Vietnamese leader expressed his belief that it will soon achieve its Green Plan 2030, contributing to the development of a strong, united, and self-resilient Asean Community.

For his part, Lee commended Vietnam’s great achievements in socioeconomic recovery and development after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vietnam is an important strategic partner of Singapore in the region, the PM affirmed.

Both leaders shared the view that the Vietnam-Singapore relationship is at its best ever, with various important cooperation agreements put in place. Notably, in the first eight months of this year, Singapore made up the largest share of foreign investments in Vietnam with total newly-registered capital exceeding US$3.6 billion.

Following the talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of seven cooperation documents, including a study agreement for high-ranking officials of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the 2024-2026 period between the two foreign ministries, and others covering economy, innovation, labour, climate change response, education, and sustainable infrastructure development.
