Indonesian president calls on World Bank to create ‘fairer for all’ financial system

MOSCOW, Sept 5 — Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) urged World Bank President Ajay Banga to address widespread criticism of the financial institution by creating a fairer global financial system.

“Indonesia and other developing countries have high hopes for you to create a global financial system that is fairer for all, especially for developing countries.”

The president added that he was sure that Banga was “aware of the various criticisms of the World Bank, including by the UN Secretary-General regarding the lack of attention to the interests of developing countries”.

During their meeting, Jokowi said the uncertainty in the current global situation affects the development of emerging economies and requires cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the World Bank.

He also emphasised Indonesia’s commitment to the development of renewable energy and called for cementing the commitments on financing and investment in green energy and economic transition.

Monday’s meeting came ahead of the 43rd Asean Summit in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, taking place from August 5-7.
