KDEBWM considers switching waste cleaning schedule for commercial hubs

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Sept 14 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is reviewing a proposal to potentially change the timing of its solid waste cleaning routine in all commercial areas in the state.

Its managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said this is in view of the difficulty currently faced by contractors in carrying out their jobs from morning to noon due to heavy traffic in these areas.

He said the plan is for works conducted in commercial areas to be moved to the wee hours.

At present, Ramli said KDEBWM has implemented this new timing by conducting night sweeping in SS14 and SS15, Subang Jaya, when there is not not much people and traffic movement, after obtaining supplementary budget from the local council.

However, solid waste collection in these two commercial areas are still being done at noon.

“If this (new timing) is successful and proves to have a positive impact, the same method will be done in other commercial areas, considering we have also received similar requests elsewhere.”

However, Ramli said any change in policy will take into account several other factors to ensure good solid waste management.

”When cleaning is done past midnight, the commercial areas will be clean in the morning. The problem is, by evening, rubbish will have piled up by evening.

“As such, we will monitor the need to conduct a second round of cleaning the same day, or if we can just do it the next day.”

KDEBWM is a wholly owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), established with the objective to manage domestic waste collection and public cleansing services in Selangor.
