Open toll payment system officially rolls out to public

SHAH ALAM, Sept 29 — Road users on 11 major highways, the majority of which are located in the Klang Valley, can finally use their debit, credit and prepaid cards to make toll payments.

The Works Ministry said the open payment system (OPS), an initiative by the Federal government, takes effect starting today for all Class 1 vehicles.

The 11 highways are Sungai Besi Expressway (Besraya), New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT), Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), SMART Tunnel, Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX), Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE), and Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE).

The Penang Bridge will also adopt the new system by the end of the year.

In a statement, the ministry said the initiative is aimed at facilitating highway users by providing new toll payment alternatives.

“Users can pay their tolls now using debit, credit and prepaid cards bearing the MyDebit, Visa or Mastercard logos,” it said.

Previously, payments were limited to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Touch n Go (TnG) cards and SmartTag.

To ensure a smooth payment process at toll plazas, the ministry urged users to ensure they are on the right lane, their cards’ contactless payment system is activated, and that they are valid and have sufficient balance.

Users must also make sure they tap their cards on the right OPS terminal, which is placed beside the TnG terminal.

“If the transaction using the bank card fails, users can use another card or utilise the TnG system.”

Earlier, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi tested the new payment system himself at the Loke Yew toll plaza along Besraya using a credit card.

In a post on social media platform X, he said the implementation of OPS is in line with the government’s effort to ensure smooth traffic at all toll plazas.

The move to use OPS was first announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook in March this year.

In May, Alexander confirmed that 12 highways will utilise the new system and that its implementation will begin as early as September.

Subsequently, a pilot test was conducted at selected highways beginning August 3 to ensure the system functioned effectively.
