SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — Selangor emerged as the champions of the 2023 Youth Cup after edging JDT IV by a single goal in a 4-3 aggregate victory, defending the trophy they won last year.

The Red Giants under-18 squad won the second leg fixture 3-2 at the UITM Stadium here last night, reported footballing website MakanBola, after the teams were held to a 1-1 draw last week.

JDT IV started the match stronger yesterday, taking an early lead through Naim Zainuddin in the fifth minute.

Selangor was the better side for the remainder of the first half, but could not find the net.

They started the second half on the front foot again, before finally equalising on the 58th minute through Adam Haikal Azizol.

Selangor eventually took the lead when Amirul Izwan Mamad Rusdi scored in the 82nd minute.

However, three minutes later, JDT IV levelled the match through Danish Hakimi Sahaludin.

Just as it was looking as though the match would end level, Selangor grabbed a last-minute winner when Haziq Aiman scored in front of the home crowd in the 89th minute.

Selangor’s Izzat Syahir Zulihsan ended the tournament as the top goal scorer, finding the back of the net 16 times.

The victory means Selangor has won the Youth Cup back-to-back, after their 2022 success.

This is the fourth time The Red Giants have won the trophy, the other two being in 2013 and 2015.
