SHAH ALAM, Sept 6 — Selangor is expecting international tourist arrivals to reach pre-pandemic levels next year following the lifting of travel restrictions globally.

Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad was quoted by The Star as saying that the state expects to welcome up to seven millions foreign tourists in 2024, similar to prior to the Covid-19 health crisis three years ago.

Presently, he said Selangor receives an average of 5.9 million international visitors annually.

As for domestic tourism, Azrul said the state expects to welcome about 24 million visitors this year.

“We don’t have the figure for expected tourism receipts, but we are working closely with Tourism Malaysia to promote our attractions,” he said when met at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, today.

Commenting on the travel fair, Azrul said he hopes the participation of Selangor’s tourism operators would be able to draw 70,000 visitors to the state, with targeted sales of RM250,000 in tour packages.

In total, 20 booths offering ecotourism, theme parks and sports tourism, among others, are on display by state tourism players.

Among the attractions featured at the fair were SplashMania Theme Park, Rumah Hutan Terapi Alam, Jumpstreet Asia, Chocolate Museum, Selangor Fruit Valley, Farm Fresh@Universiti Putra Malaysia and Sky Mirror in Kuala Selangor.

By comparison, Azrul said Tourism Selangor attracted 30,000 people and netted a revenue of RM150,000 as a result of its participation in the previous Matta Fair in March.
