Selangor to provide trauma counselling for storm victims

By Zareef Muzammil

HULU LANGAT, Sept 21 — The state government will provide counselling services to assist the Beranang storm victims in managing their stress and trauma.

State executive councillor for social welfare Anfaal Saari said the psychosocial services will be provided by the state Department of Social Welfare, at the temporary relief center in Surau Tengah Kampung Sesapan Batu Rembau.

She said the 24 to 48 hours following a disaster is a critical period, as some victims may experience trauma due to severe damage to their homes and the impact on their livelihoods.

“We need to handle this situation carefully, as most of the victims do not have regular employment. Rather, they are self-employed or involved in food businesses.

“The same goes for school-going children. So, we are providing counseling services here,” she said during her visit to the relief centre yesterday.

During the visit, Anfaal and state executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi, went to see 43 victims from 10 families who took shelter at the mentioned centre since Tuesday (September 19).

The 7pm incident on Tuesday saw Beranang hit by a storm which affected 96 residential homes and 370 victims.

The residents are from various areas, including Kampung Paya Tanjung, Kampung Sesapan Batu Minangkabau, Kampung Sungai Jai, Taman PKNS Beranang, and Kampung Sesapan Batu Rembau.
