AMPANG JAYA, Oct 16 — Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) has completed the drafting of a ‘zero discharge policy’ regulatory framework and will be presented to the state government in the near future for approval.
Its director Hasrolnizam Shaari said the policy, which is aimed at addressing the issue of river pollution caused by various activities, is expected to be enforced by next year.
“It is only appropriate that this policy be introduced taking into account the various activities along the river basins in Selangor. In order to control (these activities), we are proposing this zero discharge policy approach.
“We have already completed the framework and will submit it to the state government. We believe a decision will be made soon,” he told reporters after the World Rivers Day celebration at the Kampung Muhibah Lembah Jaya portion of Sungai Ampang, here, yesterday.
Previously, Luas had said that it is studying the possible implementation of a zero discharge policy, in line with Section 44(1)(b) of the Luas Enactment 1999, to reduce the river pollution.
On March 13, 2021, Luas was reported to have said that it had identified a total 1,187 activities along six river banks across the state that could potentially cause pollution.
Of that, 537 were located in Sungai Sembah, followed by Sungai Klang (475), Sungai Damansara (100), Sungai Semenyih (60), Sungai Baranang (9) dan Sungai Rinching (6).
An inventory study by the agency found that among the activities that could lead to pollution are manufacturing, agriculture, residential, business, services, animal husbandry and aquaculture.
