Palestine deserves absolute freedom: Zahid calls for global pressure against Israel

By Danial Dzulkifly

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 – The people of Palestine deserve absolute freedom from Israel’s illegal occupation, the right to reclaim lands unjustly taken from them, and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its heart.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this in stating Malaysia’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian cause against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas clashes that started last week.

In a ministerial statement in Parliament today, Zahid voiced the government’s apprehensions over rising casualties, while expressing the country’s categorical rejection of provocations and aggressive measures taken by the Israeli regime.

He also stressed Malaysia’s call to the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to relentlessly pressure Israel to desist from its apartheid policies and its mistreatment of Palestinians.

“Communities enduring prolonged oppression, despair and despotism will undoubtedly reach a breaking point. This has been the narrative in Palestine for years,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

“The Israeli regime, bolstered by extremist factions, has intensified its oppressive actions ever since taking reins in Tel Aviv.

“Notable provocations include violations within the Al-Aqsa Mosque precincts during religious observances by both Muslims and Christians. It’s evident that Israel often acts without heeding the sanctity of other faiths.

“History reminds us that when faced with unchecked aggression, the oppressed inevitably stand up for their tarnished rights.”

Zahid also noted the perceived double standards of Western nations, which were quick to aid in the Russia-Ukraine war but remained silent on the Palestinian plight.

Advocating a cessation of hostilities, Zahid conveyed Malaysia’s continued commitment to back realistic efforts towards a just and lasting resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“Such a solution should hinge on international law, UNSC resolutions, and align with the fundamental principles I’ve outlined.

“This encompasses the Palestinians’ right to a state, unfettered by Israel’s persistent West Bank settlement expansions,” he said.

Zahid also reaffirmed Malaysia’s unwavering support for Palestine, spanning from politics to economy and development.

“This conflict must find closure, and the global community must act,” he said

The Israel-Hamas confrontation erupted following a recent unexpected multi-front offensive initiated by pro-Palestinian group.

The ongoing conflict has claimed thousands of lives, with many more wounded or captured.
