Selangor calls for more volunteers as monsoon season approaches

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Oct 18 — The Selangor Volunteer (SERVE) initiative welcomes participants who are at least 18 years old and have an interest in humanitarian and community activities to join its volunteering team.

Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) executive director Mohammad Nizam Marjugi said that they are in need of 50 to 100 new volunteers from across the state for post-flood missions.

“In preparation for the northeastern monsoon, we need more volunteers. Disasters can happen at any time, and this could result in flooding that would impact the population.

“So, we require more volunteers. Unlike during the major flood in 2021, when they could schedule time off, most of the current volunteers do not have that flexibility.

“If there are sudden flash floods and we need to find 50 volunteers, it would be difficult. Therefore, if anyone is interested, we welcome them to join us,” he said.

Nizam said in addition to a certificate of appreciation, the volunteers will gain experience in assisting disaster victims.

“We do not give allowances, but meals and equipment for volunteer work are provided,” he said.

On September 20, SERVE was called to assist victims of a thunderstorm that wreaked havoc in five areas in Beranang.

The team of volunteers had also been involved in several previous post-flood missions that occurred out of Selangor, including the bulk waste disposal operations from nine flood-affected locations in Labis, Johor, in March this year, and helping disaster victims in Yan, Kedah, in August 2021.
