Burst bund: MB to meet agencies tomorrow, wants explanation, solution

By Zareef Muzammil

SEPANG, Nov 9 — State government leaders are set to meet the relevant agencies tomorrow morning to identify the cause of a burst bund that resulted in flash floods in several areas in Dengkil.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this is despite the state opting for better materials for the bund’s construction following a similar incident during the 2021 flooding.

Among the most affected areas were Kampung Cemperai dan Kampung Sri Tanjung.

“We need to find an immediate solution to resolve this issue, including how to build a more robust bund.

“We want to see what efforts have been taken by the agencies after clear instructions have been issued last month to take concrete measures to prevent floods in hotspot areas,” he said after a site visit to the Kiwa traffic light junction from Cyberjaya to KLIA here which was previously cordoned off following a flash flood.

The menteri besar said the Drainage and Irrigation Department has completed the construction of a temporary bund at the affected villages following the flooding incident on Sunday.

He added that the receding flood water in affected areas has allowed for cleaning works to be initiated.

“I have also referred to the district disaster management committee to bring in volunteers for assistance.”

Amirudin said the state will also distribute a RM500 financial aid to flood victims as soon as they are allowed to return home, with priority now to ensuring all displaced families are safely evacuated to temporary relief centres.

“Water in some places has begun to recede. God willing, the aid will be distributed once they are safely back home.”

Heavy rainfall on Sunday resulted in several districts in Selangor to be inundated, forcing the state to activate 11 evacuation centres. As of this morning, 740 victims from 186 families were still displaced.

Five of the centres are located in the Sepang district, three in Kuala Langat, two in Hulu Langat and one in Petaling.

Earlier, Amirudin visited flood victims in temporary relief centres at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dengkil and Dewan Orang Ramai Dato’ Ahmad Razali, here.

State executive councillors for disaster management Najwan Halimi, and housing Borhan Aman Shah as well as Sungai Pelek assemblyman Lwi Kian Keong were also present at the site visit.

Commenting on the frequent flooding at the Kiwa traffic light junction in Kota Warisan, Amirudin said a water pump will be installed in Sungai Labu to mitigate the issue.

“The reason for the flash floods at this junction is because of slow water movement into the drainage system as well as rapid development in the surrounding areas.

“We have a long term solution, but in the short term, we will place a pump to accelerate the flow of water when level rises,” he said, adding that the Sepang Municipal Council is looking for other methods to divert water to nearby rivers.
