SHAH ALAM, Nov 17 — Community gardens in Selangor are able to produce almost 64 tonnes of fresh vegetables and fruits per year, said state executive councillor for agriculture Izham Hashim.
He noted that the state government has initiated the urban agricultural programme to boost production of fresh produce, aiming to enhance both productivity and self-sufficiency among the agropreneurs.
“Although community gardens in Selangor may appear small-scale, they play a significant role in contributing nearly 64 tonnes of vegetables and fruits each year.
“We not only support them through local authorities but also facilitate by providing spaces, such as at ‘pasar tani’, for them to sell their products,” he said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
He was responding to a question from Bandar Baru Klang assemblyman Quah Perng Fei on the state government’s initiatives to boost the people’s income through modern urban farming and its efforts to enhance food production within the urban farming sector.
Izham added that the community gardens initiative is a crucial component of the Selangor Agro Transformation Plan (PeTA) 2021-2025, designed to systematically develop and implement the agriculture sector while fostering interest among women and young individuals.
He explained that under PeTA, the goal is to establish a high-income agricultural sector through the implementation of eco-friendly, high-technology systems.
