MBI: 130,000 Form Four, Five students to get free tuition next year

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Nov 13 — About 130,000 Form Four and Five students in Selangor are expected to benefit from the state’s free tuition programme next year, according to Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI.

Its corporate social responsibility and corporate communications chief Ahmad Azri Zainal in total, MBI will spend RM10 million for the Selangor People’s Tutoring Programme (PTRS) as opposed to RM7 million previously.

This, he said, is in line with the announcement made by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari during the 2024 Selangor Budget tabling last Friday.

“The expansion of the programme to include Form Four students is in line with the state government’s intention to have 200,000 students benefiting from the initiative within five years,” he said when contacted.

Azri added that the additional RM3 million allocation reflects the state administration’s commitment to improving the academic performance of secondary school students.

Amirudin had said on Friday that the free tuition programme, which currently only involves those sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, would be expanded to include Form Four students starting next year, with an additional RM3 million budget.

He said the move aligns with the state’s election manifesto, targeting the participation of 200,000 students throughout the current term.

PTRS offers free additional classes to students from low income families who are academically poor.
