PETALING JAYA, Nov 2 — The Selangor government has set aside between RM2 to RM3 million annually to nurture local golfing talents, said State Secretary Datuk Haris Kasim.

“The state government consistently initiates programmes aimed at honing the skills of junior golfers,” he said during a press conference at the launch of the 2nd Selangor International Junior Golf Championship 2023 at the Seri Selangor Golf Club today.

“One of our objectives is to enhance our capabilities and produce more professional players in the mould of Gavin Kyle Green,” Haris added, referring to the country’s top-ranked golfer.

Selangor’s prestigious international junior golf tournament, scheduled to kick off tomorrow, will see 13 teams from nine countries, including Malaysia, vying for the title, involving 96 golfers.

Representing the country will be teams from Selangor Sukma, UUM International Secondary School Melaka (UUMISM), and PKNS Golf Academy.

The other participating teams are from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, China, South Korea, and India.

Haris is confident that hosting international golf tournaments like this would enhance Selangor’s name worldwide and significantly benefit the state’s tourism sector.

The championship is organised by UUMISM in collaboration with the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) and is endorsed by PKNS Golf Management Services Sdn Bhd.

Among those attending today’s event are Green, PKNS Golf Services and Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Zubir Idrus, MGA honorary secretary Datuk Zulkifli Ismail, and UUMISM founder and president David Jeong.
