SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — Youth unemployment rate in the state has improved markedly last year, with 67,200 recorded as being unemployed compared to 94,800 the preceding year, representing a 1.3 percentage point drop.

State executive councillor for youth Najwan Halimi said the figure comprised youth aged between 15 and 30.

“From 2018 to 2022, the youth unemployment rate in Selangor ranged between 5.5 per cent and 7.4 per cent,” he said in the State Legislative Assembly today.

He was responding to a question from Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling on the unemployment rate among youths in the state over the past five years.

According to Najwan, various measures have been taken by the state government to open up more employment opportunities and increase the income level of the rakyat, particularly among the youth.

This includes the Roda Darul Ehsan (RIDE) initiative, in which the state administration offers RM550 in financial aid to encourage youths to take part in the gig economy as an alternative to generate income.

“Additionally, from 2022 to 2023, we have organised three series of Selangor Mega Job Fair,” he said.

Najwan said the event in June last year had offered 20,490 job opportunities, while this figure increased to 21,071 for the December iteration.

This year’s event, which was held at the Shah Alam City Council Convention Centre on June 17 and 18, offered 12,933 job opportunities.
