Speaker warns of action against Azmin and co after House tantrum

SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — Selangor Speaker Lau Weng San stressed that appropriate action will be taken against Opposition lawmakers who conducted themselves poorly in the State Legislative Assembly today during a motion on appointing select committee members.

He was referring to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) state assemblymen who had shouted and yelled while Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari was tabling the committee members’ names.

They also staged a walkout 30 minutes prior to the adjournment of the state assembly session today, after their demands on the composition and membership of the committees were not met.

Opposition leader and Hulu Kelang representative Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali was among the PN lawmakers who demonstrated indecorous behaviour.

“Regarding matters related to the state assembly members’ discipline, decorum, and conduct, the Rights and Privileges Committee holds both the right and responsibility to conduct investigations.

“We guarantee that witnesses will be called upon, and appropriate action taken to address the issue,” Lau said.

Later in a press conference, he explained that while the Opposition had proposed names for the 10 committees announced today, it is not mandatory to stick to the list.

“Some assemblymen have (been suggested) to be included in specific committees, and we welcome any names with an open heart. However, as the Speaker, neither the previous chairs of the House nor myself have ever promised that ‘you will get what you want’.

“Nobody will receive everything they request. In this case, about 90 per cent of the names proposed by the Opposition have been accepted.

“Even though there were only slight modifications, these have been questioned by the Opposition,” Lau told the press.

Among the names to have been replaced in a couple of the select committees were Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham and Hulu Bernam assemblyman Mu’izzuddeen Mahyuddin.
